What is messy play?

Messy play is sensory play, enabling children to work with their hands, fingers, feet, in fact their whole body, to create a controlled mess. This often involves the use of traditional ingredients such as sand, slime, water, jelly, flour and mud to use for the exploration of sensory feelings and imagination. The idea is to provide children with a variety of materials to explore textures and sensations, delving into a world of play and make believe. All of the materials used in our classes are provided, they are homemade and safe for children.

There are proven benefits to messy play, it aids physical development, hand-eye co-ordination and supports language development; all of which help us with every day basic tasks. Research has shown that messy play is one of the best ways to nurture and foster a child’s formative learning. Come along, make a mess, learn together and we will clear up after you.

Who are classes suitable for?

Our classes are suitable for babies from six months to five years old. With purposeful resources, each carefully hand-picked or homemade, we ensure that every session is designed to stimulate all seven senses: sight, sound, taste, smell, touch, Vestibular and proprioception.. Meticulous cleaning and edible resources means that children can safely explore and parents or carers can enjoy and encourage their little ones without worry. Afterall, oral exploration is a natural and important part of development in babies and toddlers. With this in mind, all of our products are food based and our “mess” is all taste safe. These freshly made materials are provided in all of our classes, meaning that you can turn up, get messy and enjoy.

Our main exploration area is made up of four messy play stations and two different water stations. All of which have been specifically designed around an exciting new theme each week. In addition to our themed trays, we have a separate sensory area as well as a further stations, which focus on the development of both fine and gross motor skills. Therefore, there is plenty of space and ample resources for children to explore, play and learn.

We promote a mixed age group as we believe there are many benefits in these precious early years. Research shows that playing with older children enhances cognitive, language and motor development because our younger babies are able to observe and imitate the older children, building their confidence and developing their new skills. Furthermore, our toddlers and pre-school children can feel a sense of achievement, as they are given the opportunity to take on this leadership role, all of which encourages empathy, creativity and kindness – important skills for little ones to develop.

Why is messy/ sensory play important and how does it help development?

Sensory and messy play plays an important role in helping babies and children to understand their senses and to explore the world around them. Nurturing an awareness of their bodies and their surroundings is crucial for their cognitive and creative development. In addition, messy play promotes physical development, as it encourages children to practise their fine and gross motor skills as well as their hand eye coordination. Children are given the opportunity to explore their senses by using their whole bodies and development these movements. Our classes allow parents and carers to play one-on-one with their children, modelling positive play. However, messy play also encourages children to learn how to play independently as well as with other children. All vital skills for their development. Children enjoy exploring textures and getting messy and they can do so in a safe and controlled environment.

We pride ourselves in providing classes which are fully inclusive and we warmly welcome all babies & children who want to explore with us at Messy Play.

Hold it

I had the opportuntity to attend messy play classes with my two children & it was the most incredible experience. F or once I could let my kids make a huge mess without having to intervene. My children absolutely loved it and didn’t want to leave. Both are looking forward to the next session.

Explore it

My daughter had her first session at messy play and we had the best time. I loved the child-led play allowing her to decide what she wanted to do. I really enjoyed meeting and chatting to other parents, as I am new to the area. We highly recommend Messy Adventures.
